Research is being conducted on the use of lasers for welding and cutting metals and ceramics and also for melting powders to coat expensive bearing parts. Pulsed lasers, such as a femtosecond laser, provide unique capabilities for micromachining and laser processing. Lasers within this laboratory include a 1.6 kW CO2 laser, two 750 mJ pulsed excimer lasers, a 20 microjoule femtosecond laser, and a 550 mJ pulsed Nd:YAG laser. |
